African Drumming

Character. Confidence. Culture.



African Drumming is a great way for students of ALL backgrounds to have fun learning not only about West African Culture, but how to listen, play, build musicianship and community, and have fun. This class will focus on technique, culture of the drums from West Africa to the Americas, and working on 1 - 2 pieces per session. You can use these skills in many aspects of your life and also drum circles, jam sessions, or as an exercise to get the blood flowing and the heart happy. No experience is required. Drums are available for class and also for purchase in our store.

Weekly beginning April 27, 2025

Sundays 4-5:30PM

  • Learn to play various West African drumming instruments, including the djembe and dunun.

  • Explore traditional rhythms, techniques, and the cultural significance of the music.

  • Develop coordination, timing, and ensemble playing skills in a supportive group setting.

  • ​Children are welcome to learn with their parent in this class

​

Students are welcome to also join Monday night ensemble with the purchase of a 10-class pass plus $15 for a t-shirt.

Please note! This is a performance ensemble. ALL Ages can join. If you are already enrolled in another class or take private lessons for African Drums you can join this class for free. Cost includes t-shirt.

 

Discover the vibrant rhythms and traditions of West African drumming in this immersive class! Whether you're a beginner or have drumming experience, this class provides a fun and enriching opportunity to deepen your connection to music and culture. Students will:

  • Learn to play breaks, solo techniques, polyrhythms and sing accompanying songs to tradition and modern rhythms

  • Build character and confidence through the process of learning to lead on your instrument, listening to others, and sharing your weekly wins with the ensemble.

  • Develop coordination, timing, and ensemble playing skills in a supportive group setting.

Students will also have several opportunities to perform in the Frederick community, sharing the joy and energy of West African drumming with others. Join us for a rhythmic journey that will leave you feeling inspired and connected!
